1. Executive Committee
The academic administration of the JDPEB is vested in an Executive Committee composed of five members, all of whom are eligible to vote on committee matters. The Executive Committee will include the Program Coordinator, a UCR EEOB faculty member, the SDSU Evolutionary Biology Masters Program Advisor, and two SDSU faculty members elected by the SDSU JDPEB Faculty to staggered, two year terms.
Responsibilities of the executive committee include:
1) advise the JDPEB Coordinator concerning overall administration of the program.
2) prepare recommendations regarding program requirements, courses, curriculum, operation, and other matters as necessary.
3) review and decide on new member applications and nominations, and conduct periodic reviews of members using the criteria in Section II.A.
4) appoint various standing and ad hoc subcommittees as needed.
5) perform the preliminary review of student applications and forward competitive files to the Joint Admissions Committee for further consideration.
6) maintain the JDPEB handbook and review, modify if deemed appropriate, and approve the handbook annually.
2. Joint Admissions Committee
The Joint Admissions Committee is a four-member committee consisting of two SDSU JDPEB faculty and two UCR JDPEB faculty. The term of membership is three years. The JDPEB Coordinator appoints the SDSU faculty members to the committee and the EEOB Director appoints the UCR faculty members. At least one of the UCR Joint Admissions Committee members must also serve on the EEOB Graduate Advisory Committee to facilitate communication between the two committees.
Responsibilities of the joint admissions committee include:
1) review student applications forwarded by the Executive Committee and decide which applicants to recommend for admission.
2) forward applications that are recommended for admission to the EEOB Graduate Advisory Committee for approval. Successful applicants must not only meet the general requirements for admission of both institutions with graduate standing, but must also receive approval from the EEOB Graduate Advisory Committee.
3) send files of successful applicants, along with supporting documentation, to the Graduate Divisions of both UCR and SDSU. The Graduate Division Deans make the final decisions regarding admission. To be accepted into the JDPEB, a student must be accepted by both SDSU and UCR.
4) finalize arrangements linking an incoming student to a major professor at SDSU. Normally, a student will apply to work with one or more specific faculty members who indicated an interest in the student, or more typically, agreed to supervise them if accepted.
3. Guidance Committee
This committee will consist of four faculty members, two chosen from each institution. From SDSU, the committee must include the student's prospective dissertation advisor and an additional, programmatically appropriate, member. From UCR, the committee members will be drawn from faculty within the EEOB graduate program. In consultation with the student, the Guidance Committee plans the student's program through Advancement to Candidacy.
4. Qualifying Committee
This Oral Examination Committee normally consists of five faculty members: a minimum of 2 UCR EEOB faculty, a UCR outside committee member, and a minimum of 2 SDSU EB faculty. The SDSU major advisor cannot be a member of the Oral Exam Committee.
5. Dissertation Committee
This committee consists of at least four faculty members, including the major advisor. In all, at least two members must be from the EEOB faculty of UCR and at least two members must be from the EB faculty of SDSU. After passing the Written and Oral Exams, students file for Advancement to Candidacy with the Graduate Divisions at UCR and SDSU. On the petitions, the student states the topic of their dissertation and names the members of the Dissertation Committee, which is approved by the Graduate Divisions. The Dissertation Committee is responsible for advising the student on the research and provides final approval of the dissertation.
